When you say to yourself "I can't take drinking alcohol anymore", and if you are truly addicted, your biggest obstacle to quitting will be that part of you that has developed during your drinking career the relationship you have developed with alcohol physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The truth of the matter is your biggest obstacle to putting that drink down is the sick part of you, the addicted part of you, is not going to cooperate. The sick part of you will never want to stop drinking. The healthy part of you recognizes the damage you are taking from alcohol and knows this situation has gone way over the line, but again, the sick part of you will never want to stop for good. Life without alcohol is too painful a consideration if you can even picture it at all. And walking away from something that has become such an integral part of your life with predictable (therefore comforting on some level) results is a frightening step into the unknown.

First you need to take stock of your situation. You need to be very honest with yourself and take a good close up look at the damage alcohol has caused in your life. And know that if you continue to drink, your life will continue to go downhill.

For some of the more functional drinkers, life may look good from the outside. But those who are seemingly "pulling it off" are the ones who are more likely to eventually run into serious health problems or even death from the standard drinking illnesses such as cirrhosis, simply because they really aren't pushed to stop drinking as soon as the drinker who is "brought to their knees" by alcohol earlier in their drinking careers. This brand of drinker is suffering a multitude of effects much earlier than the functional drinker and being more desperate and driven as a result is more likely to seek help sooner.

If drinking is taking a serious toll on you and after you have determined you have had enough of the ongoing problems alcohol addiction is causing you, you will need not only the courage to make your start, but also to choose a good strategy in the form of help to free yourself from the constant, never ending drinking that will inevitably remove everything you care about from your life.
